This Week In Bay Area Live Shows: Mar 29 – Apr 4

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

I was hard-pressed to know that the day I fly out to Boston is the same day Great Lake Swimmers play the Bottom of the Hill. This wouldn’t be that much of a problem if I didn’t love their new album, Lost Channels, so much. No matter, I’m happy with seeing the brilliant Chad VanGaalen and Women perform at the same venue this Tuesday.

If you haven’t already noticed, noise-freak rockers The Mae Shi and pre have been invading the Bay Area. They swung by the Berkley Amoeba Records and San Francisco’s Hemlock Tavern on Friday, Visalia on Saturday, and will be playing at Your House in Oakland tonight with Religious Girls. You can also catch them this week at…
03/30 Los Altos – KFJC live
03/30 San Jose – Nickel City
03/31 Santa Cruz – Crepe Place

Also tonight is Goapele at Yoshi’s Oakland, Emiliana Torrini at The Independent, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy at the Orchard Spotlight in Santa Rosa (who will also be playing the Fillmore the following day), and The Bronx at Rickshaw Stop. In fact, Rickshaw Stop is kind of busy with Sebastien Grainger on Monday and Kid Sister on Wednesday. Well, Kid Sister cancelled (AGAIN!), so nevermind.

RATATAT sold out the Fillmore for both Thursday and Friday. So keep checking craiglist if you haven’t bought tickets yet.

The Bottom of the Hill will be hosting White Denim on Thursday and Lily Allen and Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head visit the Warfield Theatre this Saturday.

See you out there!

Songs For People That Work The Weekend

Friday, January 16th, 2009

If you’re looking at this picture and going, “uhh…and?” That thing in the top right hand corner is the final moments of the Airbus 320 as it descends towards the Hudson River yesterday. A miracle indeed. I try to imagine exactly what would be going through my mind as my plane descends to what seems like sudden death, “…that was the best ice-cream soda I ever tasted!”

Thing-To-Keep-You-Busy-At-Work: Type in ODB lyrics into Microsoft Sam. Let the hilarity ensue.

This mix of songs is for anyone who has to work the weekend (like me). None of the songs have anything to do with work (as far as I know) or weekends. I just thought I’d like to listen to this music while I’m typing in ODB lyrics into Microsoft Sam…uh, I mean, working.

“We Work On Columbus Day Weekend” Playlist

I kind of laugh to myself when people ask me, “Hey what are you doing this Columbus Day weekend?” When I say I have to work, they usually give me that look like I just dented my car. “Oooo, bummer dude.” It’s no big deal when it comes down to it. Weekends lose their meaning when you have a schedule like mine. I’m sure I’m not the only one. I’m not even sure how to ‘observe’ Columbus Day. Well there’s always Indigenous Peoples Day. Hooray oppression!
