I’M BACK! SHOWS THIS WEEK OCT 13-17! That aren’t Treasure Island Festival…

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

I had a nice little trip out to NY, saw family & friends, caught an improv show in the city (Magnet Theater….it was hilarious) and saw Paranormal Activity (It did what it was supposed to…scare the fuck out of me). Now it’s back to business…

No Kuestionnaire today, I just back yesterday and barely had time to piece one together, but I’ll make that up for you this weekend as we will be getting exclusive access to the Treasure Island Festival! So expect some surprises and awesome ‘treasures’ to come your way.

I don’t know what happened this past weekend in the Bay…I’m kind of out of the loop on that. But I am aware that Vampire Weekend will be doing a gig in Lafayette at the Lafayette Town Hall Theatre [weird]. Get tickets as soon as you can and if you haven’t already heard their new tune, Horchata, it’s downloadable from here.

I listened to mostly the new Karen O / Where The Wild Things Are Soundtrack, new Flaming Lips, and the Sunny Day Real Estate re-releases on vacation and all have made my trip all the more relaxing. More on that this week…

And now…your ‘To See’ list…

Today! Sunny Day Fucking Real Estate at The Fillmore! With Jealous Sound nonetheless! I’ve been sneaking a peak at the setlists and they do not disappoint. If you’re missing out one a Kuestionnaire, read our short and informationless Kuestionnaire with lead vocalist Jeremy Enigk from last year. Also happening is Junior Boys at the Mezzanine, The Pogues, DeVotchKa, Zander Schloss and Sean Wheeler at The Warfield, and A Wilhelm Scream, The Riot Before, Living With Lions and Heartsounds at Thee Parkside.

Wednesday, Great Lake Swimmers, Laura Gibson and The Wooden Birds grace The Great American Music Hall and These Arms Are Snakes, dd/mm/yyyy and Glaciers rock out at the Bottom of the Hill.

Thursday, Say Anything, Eisley, Moneen and Moving Mountains play Slim’s, Gogol Bordello and Apostle of Hustle play The Fox Theater, Moby will be at The Warfield, and doom metalers Nadja rock Oakland’s Terminal.

Friday, Brand New do an acoustic set at San Fran’s Rasputin Music at 4pm and then go to the San Jose State Event Center Arena with Manchester Orchestra and The Builders and the Butchers, Butthole Surfers and Melvins play the Grand Regency Ballroom, hardcore terrors HORSE the band take on San Jose’s PBSJ, and Nellie McKay & The Aristocrats do Yoshi’s San Francisco.

Saturday, Treasure Island Festival takes over the night scene as well with Dan Deacon, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Teeth Mountain, Nuclear Power Pants, and DJ Aaron Axelson at the Mezzanine and A Place To Bury Strangers plus These Are Powers, All The Saints, and Geographer at The Independent. More info here.

Also on Saturday, WHY? with Mount Eerie, Au and Serengetti & Polyphonic at The Great American Music Hall and Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis, M. Ward, and Jim James (aka Yim Yames) also known as Monsters of Folk do The Fox Theater.

Sunday, stylish synthpoper La Roux plays The Great American Music Hall and Straylight Run does the Rickshaw Stop.

Lots to do if you didn’t get your Treasure Island tickets in time. Have fun!

This Week In Bay Area Live Shows: Aug 16th – 22nd

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

Just another eventful week in the Bay. Vans Warped Tour returns with another mediocre line-up, but I’ll do my best to pick out the best in case you’re going. Here we go…

Tonight features the “Divas of the Dark” showcase with dark cabaret soulful singers Jill Tracy, Nicki Jaine and Loop Station at Café du Nord.

Monday has Elvis Costello & The Sugarcanes at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga and the whimsical mighty tiger play at Om Sweet Om.

Tuesday it’s going to be Green Day and Franz Ferdinand at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Emilíana Torrini sweetens up The Great American Music Hall, and Pissed Jeans tours their new album with Mi Ami opening at Bottom of the Hill.

Wednesday has post punk act The Prids, Swann Danger, and Butterfly Bones at the Bottom of the Hill, Crocodiles rocking at the Rickshaw Stop and Canadian indie pop act Mother Mother kick it at Café du Nord.

Thursday has Vans Warped Tour 2009 visiting the Shoreline Amphitheatre. Another shit line-up but there are a few gems if you’re one of those unlucky enough to go. OKay only four; Thrice, Less Than Jake, P.O.S., and Manic Hispanic. Thrice has always been a favorite of mine and P.O.S. has made one of my favorite hip-hop albums of the year. Less Than Jake and Manic Hispanic are just a blast to see live. That’s about it.

Friday hosts minimalistic electronic artist Steve Bug at 444 Jessie St, Dizzy Balloon rocks The Phoenix Theater in Petaluma, and straight-up rock act The Trophy Fire play Blake’s on Telegraph in Berkeley.

Saturday we’ve got technical thrash metal band Forbidden play at Slim’s, Jedi Mind Tricks hit up The Independent, and Bay Area favorites Flipper and Triclops! destroy Annie’s Social Club. Oh and don’t forget to check out Jay Reatard playing at San Francisco’s Amoeba Records at 6pm.

See you out there!

This Week In Bay Area Live Shows: July 5th – 11th

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

I’m back! Miss me? I bet you were all like, “Where am I going to get my music fix?!? GAAA!!” Well calm down, I’m here to save you from mediocrity and things like that. First off I had a very good vacation out in New York with the family and friends. Took some time out to listen to the new Gifts From Enola, Riceboy Sleeps, Here We Go Magic, Dirty Projectors, and Marissa Nadler. All are very good and I should have brief reviews up shortly. So lets get a move on and showcase some of this week’s best in Bay Area shows.

Tonight is kind of tame with the Low Red Land, Two Sheds, Birds & Batteries, and Finn Riggins show at the Fort Gallery in Oakland canceled. Which means you’ll have to look elsewhere for experimental Americana folk music tonight.

Monday has psychobilly act Reverend Horton Heat and Nekromantix freaking out the The Great American Music Hall.

Tuesday I’ll be at the Dirty Projectors and What’s Up? show at The Independent. Being that I can’t help but enjoy Dirty Projectors’ newest album, ‘Bitte Orca’, no matter how much I crank up the critic-o-meter, it’s still a damn good album. So I’m looking forward to this one. You might already have tickets to Duran Duran at The Fillmore that night as well. Have fun with that.

Wednesday has person L, The Dangerous Summer, and Ace Enders And A Million Different People which features members to The Early November at the Bottom of the Hill. Expect some sappy heartfelt sing-songwriter tunes coming from out there. Also, catch Nightmare of You and dance-rocker Plushgun at the Swedish American Hall with Magic and Brian Bonz.

Good friend of Kata Rokkar and respected Bay Area music website ipickmynose will be hosting a show with locals The Rural Alberta Advantage to say farewell as lead writer Adrian departs to South Africa. I highly recommend you go and show some love and enjoy a good night of local music. If you’re more in the mood for moshpits and mohawks, Rise Against, Billy Talent and Rancid will be making noise at the Oracle Arena in Oakland the same night. Oh yeah and Bay Area based indie pop duo Rubies celebrate their album release party at the Rickshaw Stop that night as well.

Friday has psychotrance dance duo Infected Mushroom at Club Vertigo in San Jose (Correction: San Jose, Costa Rica, but no worries, they’ll be in San Fran on the 17th; thanks eric), The Mighty Mighty Bosstones (they got back together again?) and Voodoo Glow Skulls at The Fillmore, and Texas noise rockers Indian Jewelry play 21 Grand in Oakland.

Saturday is pretty eventful with Death Cab for Cutie, Andrew Bird, and Ra Ra Riot at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley. That’s quite a line-up. Lastly, Brooklyn noise rock heroes Oneida play the Bottom of the Hill with Wooden Shjips (not a typo).

See you out there!

This Is Week In Bay Area Live Shows: June 21st – 27th

I’m seeing Grizzly Bear Today!

If you haven’t already immersed yourself in their newest album, Veckatimest, you need to do that right now. I’m serious, this is no joke, Veckatimest is one of the better albums released this year. If you’re already on the Grizzly-train and in the Bay area, you probably already have ticket to their Sunday and Monday shows at The Fillmore. It’s going to be a special night. Oh and I’m hearing great things about the opening act, Here We Go Magic. So show up early.

If you’re not attending the GB show tomorrow night, check out post-metal giants Isis and Helms Alee at The Blank Club in San Jose or at The Great American Music Hall on Tuesday. Also going on Monday is an early performance by non-other than Elvis Costello at Amoeba Record in San Francisco. It’s at noon, so those of you who don’t have to work, you’re in luck!

Tuesday brings post-rock spoken word act mewithoutYou with prog-rockers The Dear Hunter (no, not that one) at Slim’s and electro-pop band Starfucker hits up the Bottom of the Hill.

Wednesday has folk artists Papercuts and Port O’Brien at The Independent, Canadian indie rocks Sunset Rubdown at the Rickshaw Stop, and synth-pop act Deastro (Kuestionnaire on Tuesday) and Tempo No Tempo at Bottom of the Hill.

Yanni in Oakland at the Oracle Arena on Thursday!!! I didn’t even know he was still around. You can also check out noise-pop act Sugar and Gold, Castledoor, and Music For Animals at the Rickshaw Stop and The Karriem Riggins Virtuoso Experience Tour with special guest DJ Pete Rock.

I will be in NY for this but …

…if it’s not already sold out (probably is though), The Grand Ballroom At the Regency Center is hosting Phoenix, Boys Noize, DJ Vadim, Diplo, Amazing Baby, and a monsterload of Bay area DJs for this year’s Spectrum Festival on Friday. Meanwhile, David Byrne and DeVotchKa brighten up the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, funk-trnoica act Major Lazer hit up San Francisco’s Amoeba Records at 6pm, and Wilco and Okkervil River will be at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga as well as the Greek Theatre on Saturday.

Saturday also bring one of the most soulsucking tours in recent memory, Vans Warped Tour 2009. What used to be a celebration of individuality for young kids quickly turned into a Monster Energy Drink sponsored shitfest. There are (very) few exceptions though. Prog-metal act Thrice, indie rockers Dear and the Headlights, and brutal hip-hop artist P.O.S. light up the line-up…but only a little.

If I were not in NY on Saturday, I would see Cursive and Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band at the Great American Music Hall or the heavy metal onslaught of YOB and Will Haven at Slim’s. But I won’t…oh well.

See you out there!

Hippie…err…Harmony Festival at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa is hosting a megaload of freespirited, earth loving, soulful, and psychedelic artists this weekend. You have Shpongle, Matisyahu, India.Arie, Balkan Beat Box, Michael Franti & Spearhead, ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra), Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, Wassabi Collective, Steve Kimock’s Crazy Engine and DJ Gaudi all rocking out from Friday to Sunday. Let me take this opportunity now to mention that I hate Michael Franti. WTF is Rebel Rock? Really? Please stop this nonsense, it hurts my brain thingy.

Saturday is where the party is though. Au Revoir Simone and The Antlers takeover Bimbo’s 365 Club, garage punk wacko Jay Reatard and Thee Oh Sees perform at The Independent, and Papercuts will be at the San Francisco Amoeba Records at 2pm.

My highlight of the week is Bat for Lashes at The Great American Music Hall. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite female vocalists and is already at the top of my Best Albums of 2009 with ‘Two Suns.’ Expect a full report of the show.
