Lissie
On the 22nd of January, I attended the City and Colour show at The Fillmore. Not to see the headlining act, but to see the sweet and commanding, Lissie. She certainly won over the audience with her powerful stage presence and soulful voice. People flocked the merch desk almost instantly after her performance. I know this because I had a bit of trouble getting to the bathroom. She’s opening for some pretty big names (last year she was in San Fran with Ray LaMontagne), so try and catch her on her tour with The Low Anthem and at this year’s SXSW.
Her modest and drifting EP, Why You Runnin’, can be purchased here.

Dave Gleason
A special little treat, Dave Gleason was upstairs during the intermission. He played for about 5 people and seemed content with that.

With only a few days left on their nationwide tour supporting the re-release of Diary and LP2, Sunny Day Real Estate descended on the Fillmore last night with epic force. Opening the show was the [also] reunited Jealous Sound who played with as much passion and grandeur as a I remembered when they opened for Engine Down five or so years ago. They made a perfect opening act for Sunny Day, being their sound is very straight-up rock with that early 90s emo flair.
Sunny Day Real Estate took the stage a gazed across the crowd with huge smiles on their faces. I don’t think they expected such a huge turn out. The entire time they played with bludgeoning force and the amount of energy you would expect if you were to catch them live in 1995. This wasn’t a band that was trying to re-invent their sound at all, this was a band that understood the music they played years ago and knew why so many people still latch onto these amazing records they have put out over the years. Playing mostly from Diary and LP2, a nice surprise came when they performed Guitar and Video Games from How It Feels to Be Something On and a new song they wrote before the tour. Both were played flawlessly and gave more reason to fall in love with a band that I already had so much affection for. No Rising Tide song were played, which was understandable due to the mixed emotions from not only the band, but fans as well. All in all though, SDRE brought the house down at the Fillmore last night. Here’s to hoping they return with a How It Feels to Be Something On re-issue and maybe a new record on the horizon.
One can only hope…

We’re hosting another show and this time it’s going to HUGE! We have yet to announce our special guest headliner who will blow your mind! Anyway, the line-up alone already is wicked awesome. Oso is a one of a kind math rock/folk act from Santa Barbara with one of the most overlooked albums of 2008, Kuno Esama. Benjamin Henderson is kind of a local South Bay rock hero with bands like Delta Activity and The Good Hustle under his belt and his own solo act which will be featured at the Flux 53 on Oakland at 8pm. Do whatever it takes to come out and OH!…I almost forgot, BYOB! So swing by and rock the fuck out with us. More info about the show will arise during the week. I am very excited about this.
Tonight we have an awesome line-up with The Gaslight Anthem, Murder by Death, and Frank Turner at The Fillmore, and Grouper, Christina Carter, Barn Owl, Ilyas Ahmed, Common Eider, King Eider, Sun Circle and Brendon Murray at Cafe Du Nord.
Monday finds the newly re-united The Get Up Kids, Youth Group and Pretty & Nice at The Fillmore and the face melting line-up with In Flames and Between the Buried and Me rocks The Grand Ballroom At the Regency Center.

Tuesday has the sold out Bon Iver and Megafaun at The Fillmore (busy week for The Fillmore, eh?), Pet Shop Boys at The Warfield, and The Most Serene Republic and Grand Archives at the Bottom of the Hill.
Wednesday we have Rodrigo y Gabriela at Oakland’s The Fox Theater and the amazing Portugal. The Man performs with Drug Rug and Robert Francis at The Independent.
Thursday, Bon Iver and Megafaun do The Fox Theater in Oakland, OM and Lichens soothe The Independent, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: The Nightman Cometh Live will be at Nob Hill Masonic Center, and Manic Street Preachers does The Fillmore.

I’m seeing Grizzly Bear Today!
If you haven’t already immersed yourself in their newest album, Veckatimest, you need to do that right now. I’m serious, this is no joke, Veckatimest is one of the better albums released this year. If you’re already on the Grizzly-train and in the Bay area, you probably already have ticket to their Sunday and Monday shows at The Fillmore. It’s going to be a special night. Oh and I’m hearing great things about the opening act, Here We Go Magic. So show up early.
If you’re not attending the GB show tomorrow night, check out post-metal giants Isis and Helms Alee at The Blank Club in San Jose or at The Great American Music Hall on Tuesday. Also going on Monday is an early performance by non-other than Elvis Costello at Amoeba Record in San Francisco. It’s at noon, so those of you who don’t have to work, you’re in luck!
Tuesday brings post-rock spoken word act mewithoutYou with prog-rockers The Dear Hunter (no, not that one) at Slim’s and electro-pop band Starfucker hits up the Bottom of the Hill.
Wednesday has folk artists Papercuts and Port O’Brien at The Independent, Canadian indie rocks Sunset Rubdown at the Rickshaw Stop, and synth-pop act Deastro (Kuestionnaire on Tuesday) and Tempo No Tempo at Bottom of the Hill.
Yanni in Oakland at the Oracle Arena on Thursday!!! I didn’t even know he was still around. You can also check out noise-pop act Sugar and Gold, Castledoor, and Music For Animals at the Rickshaw Stop and The Karriem Riggins Virtuoso Experience Tour with special guest DJ Pete Rock.
I will be in NY for this but …
…if it’s not already sold out (probably is though), The Grand Ballroom At the Regency Center is hosting Phoenix, Boys Noize, DJ Vadim, Diplo, Amazing Baby, and a monsterload of Bay area DJs for this year’s Spectrum Festival on Friday. Meanwhile, David Byrne and DeVotchKa brighten up the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, funk-trnoica act Major Lazer hit up San Francisco’s Amoeba Records at 6pm, and Wilco and Okkervil River will be at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga as well as the Greek Theatre on Saturday.
Saturday also bring one of the most soulsucking tours in recent memory, Vans Warped Tour 2009. What used to be a celebration of individuality for young kids quickly turned into a Monster Energy Drink sponsored shitfest. There are (very) few exceptions though. Prog-metal act Thrice, indie rockers Dear and the Headlights, and brutal hip-hop artist P.O.S. light up the line-up…but only a little.
If I were not in NY on Saturday, I would see Cursive and Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band at the Great American Music Hall or the heavy metal onslaught of YOB and Will Haven at Slim’s. But I won’t…oh well.
See you out there!
Sunset Rubdown – Apollo and the Buffalo and Anna Anna Anna Oh!
Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band – Cheer For Fate
Grizzly Bear – Cheerleader
Dear and the Headlights – Talk About
Major Lazer – Hold The Line (DJ Edit)
