In the year 1998, Sole joined Pedestrian to kick start the Anticon label powerhouse you know today. Years later Sole took the underground by storm with an undeniable stage presence and his critically acclaimed albums, particularly the amazing Selling Live Water. The impact was unquestionable and that next year Sole solidified his place amongst the independent hip hop elite with both his respected label and his impressive body of work.
This time around, Sole is ready to take the world by storm with Sole & the Skyrider Band. After already redefining the scene with their debut in 2007, Sole along with the Skyrider Band, Bud Berning (producer), John Wagner (drums), and William Ryan Fritch (multi-instrumentalist), along with guests like Markus Acher from 13 & God and The Notwist, present the long awaited sophomore full-length album Plastique. It’s as imaginative, experimental, diverse and genre-defying as ever, but what did you expect?
You can also download the Battlefields EP for free here.

The dates: March 17-21. On those days hundreds upon hundreds of bands from across the world will descend upon Austin, Texas for SXSW, and I among others will be scrambling to see every band we can without passing out.
This will be my first time at SXSW and from what I hear, it’s impossible to see all the bands I want. So I’ve divided them out and decided to see bands I’ve never seen before and ditch the ones I already have. Well as of today, SXSW posted the schedules for all five days of showcases on their website.
I’ll be ‘working’ while I’m at SXSW, meaning I’ll be telling you my experience at this clusterfuck of a festival. So stay tuned, this is going to be fun!

Brutal, cinematic, clobbering, psychedelic; all of which could easily describe the Sharon, Massachusetts five-piece instru-metal band, Irepress. Having built a small following with their debut album, Samus Octology, Irepress have continued with their brand of chiseled post rock with their latest release, Sol Eye Sea I. Sol Eye Sea I is an album filled with all the metal trimmings, minimal jazz primers, and cryptic riffs that hit out of nowhere with the pummeling impact of a meteor. Irepress is proving that New England is becoming the new hot-bed for quality instrumental music and have done so by presenting us with this sea-monster of an album (which you can purchase on CD or double LP here).
Irepress will be playing in Dallas, TX at Reno’s Chop Shop with Zoroaster on March 18th. Also they will be playing at this year’s SXSW on the 19th of March at PLUSH with Constants, Caspian, Junius, Look Mexico, and the well respected Jonah Matranga of Far. For more SXSW dates and other current US tour dates, click here.
This week Bret Silverberg, Jarett Ring, and Jon (Dino) DiNapoli of Irepress answer this week’s Kuestionnaire and show that they all seem to have similar tastes…who woulda thunk it?
1. Of all the bands/artists in your CD/record collection, which one is your most cherished?
Bret: Personally, I would say “Downward is Heavenward” by Hum. The rest of the band has all different answers to that one.
Dino: First CD I have is the “Last Action Hero” soundtrack.
Jarrett: I’d say “OK Computer.”
2. What have you been listening to lately?
Bret: This band called Pattern is Movement and Menomena.
Jarrett: Wolf Parade, These Arms Are Snakes
Dino: King Crimsnon, The Residents
3. What’s your favorite local band?

Jarrett: St. Vincent at SXSW
7. What musician would you like to hang out/work with for a day?
Dino: Adam Jones or Mike Patton
Jarrett: Ian Williams of Battles, Thom Yorke
Bret: Matt Talbot of Hum
8. What four albums you would bring to a deserted island?
Jarrett: Poison the Well “Opposite of December,” Radiohead “OK Computer,” Minus the Bear “Planet of Ice,” Jeremy Enigk “World Waits”
Dino: Every Tool album

Man, if I had a dollar for every band named after a sweater, I’d have, ooh, at least a dollar by now. Which is to say that I would have earned the grand total of one dollar from An Horse if we lived in a world wonderful enough that you could make money simply by bands naming themselves after sweaters. You could then use that dollar to purchase An Horse’s new album, Rearrange Beds, which comes out tomorrow.
Rearrange Beds is the duo’s debut album, and there are more than a few good reasons for the buzz you are already hearing about them. A live show embodying the honesty and intensity at the heart of post-punk rock and a sound defying any limiting definitions you may have for modern indie rock are just a few of those reasons. Active for only a year, they have already garnered an impressive following. Singer Kate Cooper’s vocals and lyrics will soon have you filing her right next to Exene Cervenka and Penelope Houston as powerful and vital singers. Musically, the band explores territories similar to Fugazi, Pavement, and Sleater-Kinney. It’s a little too pretty to be punk, a little too raw to be pop, and a little too elegantly constructed to be rock & roll. And that makes it just about perfect.
Check out the band on tour with Wintersleep and later on tour with Appleseed Cast as well as this year’s SXSW. For dates click here.
You can purchase the album on iTunes here and buy the physical version tomorrow wherever records are sold.

It would be impossible for me to describe the plethra of bands attending this year’s SXSW. I’ll leave that for someone who has more time on their hands than me. I will however tell you about a handful of shows that I believe you should check out (if you’re going) or just check out the band’s music if you’re not going (like me).
Fans of sweet folk and people who became a slave to anything Bon Iver puts out should check out The Low Anthem. The Providence, RI trio released the critically acclaimed Oh My God, Charlie Darwin just last September and has been riding the wave of it’s success since. They’ll be all over the place at SXSW, so there’s no excuse to miss them…
