Portugal. The Man is one of the most hard working bands right now. Don’t believe me? Look at their back catalog, they release a stellar album every year and tour like nomads. The kind of hard work can be rewarding for the listener and certainly is with their fifth studio album, American Ghetto. Those signature drum loops and neo-soul beach sound is back from last year’s Satanic Satanist, but more prevalent and noticeable. It’s almost like they took a poll of what people loved the most about their last few albums and created American Ghetto. A bit of tease for those of you wishing for warmer weather, but once it comes, this will be playing in your car stereo non-stop. Highly recommended.

Opening with a whisper and ending with a snarlingly epic conclusion. Perhaps the theme of the album is an ideal reflection of Caspian themselves, a band that insists on finding its own way and settles for nothing less than instrumental perfection.

As usual Bradford Cox connects to the very heart of the melancholy and joyous side of music. Logos in my opinion is better than anything he’s ever done. I know how bold that is, but I love this record.

A lyrical mastermind and a thought-provokingly amazing songwriter. This is punk music for the hip-hop soul and done so cleverly with the help of the Rhymesayers. Songs like Low Light Low Life and Goodbye are alone worth purchasing this album.

The amount of emotion poured into Hospice is unrelenting. Having already heard Bear early in the year, I had to find out what the rest of the album sounded like. Bear ended up being re-translated for me once I had heard the whole album through. Like reading one middle chapter of a book and then going and reading the whole thing in order. Hospice is a gorgeous and delicate record and a sneak attack on the listener’s emotions.

His craft in songwriting and artful hi-fi production are well represented in Romanian Names. I’m pretty sure the world will end if this man makes one bad record. Keep saving the world my friend!

As a sucker for ambient music and electro-acoustic soundscapes, Sleep Whale’sHouse Boat is my year’s MVP. A friend of mine said they reminded him of The Album Leaf, I responded with, “No, these guys are better.”

Drenched in alien-like soundscapes and complex acoustics, “Jónsi” Þór Birgisson (Sigur Rós) and Alex Somers (Parachutes) made the world of ambient music shake with Riceboy Sleeps. The album’s ethereal movements and angelic atmosphere made listening an almost supernatural experience.

This is a more fragile record than people give it credit for. Songs like Moon and Moon and Glass are worth cuddling up with a pair of headphones and letting Natasha Khan’s soothing voice take you.

Probably his best record to date. He’s been batting 1000 this year and this is no exception. Enlisting Madlib, Chad Hugo, and Georgia Anne to help produce this record was the obvious reason this record turned out so well, but Mos Def still has that lyrical flow everyone knows and loves.

The amount of talent Annie Clark exudes on Actor is undeniably amazing. Her beautiful voice melds perfectly with her intricate guitar work and the grand orchestrations make Actor quite possibly her best work so far.

The atmosphere that lurks in this album is the definition of ‘heavy’ music. Not heavy as in metal, just weighted and dark. You are instantly transported and free to let your imagination run a muck.

Punch me if you want but I wasn’t too impressed with Island’s new album, Vapours. However, Alden Penner’s (along with Brendan Reed and Bethany Or) Clues pretty much made up for the disappointment of both Vapours and probably never getting another Unicorns record. Penner’s voice carries the listener off on an epically fun voyage. It’s like a Pixar movie as a record; accessible, joyous, and overwhelmingly creative.

It was almost like he took a step back from his past records and took a different approach on this album. For the better of course, but the songs sound more rich with landscape and heavy on layers. That signature prose and instrumental genius exists, making Noble Beast one of the more fun folkish records of the year.

They are quickly becoming one of my favorite bands. Not only because of their performance with Björk but because of their uncategorizeable style on Bitte Orca. Their complex arrangements of harmonies and jazzy melodies make this record a pleasure never to be guilty over. My only complaint; too short.

It’s extremely difficult to make pop music art again. Last year MGMT almost made it but their record fizzled out midway. No band this year could match the sheer catchiness and addictive rhythms of Phoenix. No wonder commercials and radio have been jumping at the chance to play their music.

5. BlakRoc – BlakRoc
When some one says ‘rap-rock’ I want to punch a puppy…just want to get that out there. But when I heard BlakRoc, I heard the roots of two genres meshing together and creating something that probably should have been done a long time ago. Mixing the Black Keys with the likes of Q-Tip, Raekwon, RZA, Pharoahe Monch, etc; you get a potent mix that requires the listener to crank the volume.

4. Fanfarlo – Reservoir
Criminally underrated and perhaps annoyingly overhyped. Either way it’s undeniable that the humble Fanfarlo entered this year with one of the most heartwarming and lovable records. I see bright lights in their future, catch them while you can.

While not exactly another Sunny Day Real Estate album, Jeremy Enigk’sOk Bear is a grower, and boy does it grow on you. Covering all aspects of his music that I love and even touching on new ground, Enigk made the long drives to work that much more beautiful.

Portugal. The Man’s newest album features more than just eleven fiercely transcendent vignettes. The Satanic Satanist is a single machine as well as a long suite of compositions, segued together into one seamless presentation. Born from the band’s ravenous creative appetite, many months of dedicated touring and their rare commitment to challengingly perfect songcraft, all set against a canvas of Portland winter skies. Content instead to rely upon their faith in each other, their music and the steady guidance of friends. This is a band that has embraced that they are performers and musicians for life and witnessing their live shows are famously awe-inspiring. I don’t exaggerate, this band is the real deal.

The week keyboardist Ryan Neighbors answers probably one of the best Kuestionnaire’s we’ve had in a long time (question #5 in particular).
1. Could you state your name and what you do in the band?
My name is Ryan Neighbors and I play keys and sing background vocals.
2. How would you describe your sound?
I would say we are a rock ‘n roll band with many touches of pop and psychedelia. We have soul too, lots of it.
4. Any concerts that blew your mind recently?
I think the last concert that actually blew my mind was Air at the Crystal Ballroom a couple years back. I hadn’t seen them before so I wasn’t sure how they were going to execute their sound. They were absolutely incredible. Seeing them play their songs with a five piece band and live drummer was so cool.
5. Any non-musical influences you would like to mention?
I would say my biggest non-musical influences are friends and travel. Almost all of my friends are involved in projects of some sort, whether its building a wind turbine or recording a record. Surrounding myself with people like that keep me wanting to work on things and have hobbies. If all my friends just played video games and and ate Dorito’s all day I would be a little less motivated to do interesting things. Touring and traveling has also had a great influence on me. Just seeing different places in the world gives me a great appreciation for everything.
6. If your music was to be the theme of a film/TV show, what would it be?
Growing pains has the greatest theme song ever. I will just leave it at that. It can’t be topped, I would never even try.
7. What musician/artist would you like to collaborate with for a day?
Harry Nilsson. I love his story telling and his loose style. I think spending a day with him would be great and very free. I feel like he could take anything and somehow make it intriguing. He is a genius.
8. What is the album you listen to on a cold rainy day?
I definitely don’t have a standard rainy day album, but today was rainy and I listened to ‘Get Lonely’ by the Mountain Goats. I just recently started listening to that record. They have so many records so it can be difficult to know which albums to to put time into but I really like this one. That man has some good delivery. He seems to make the simplest things seem important. I like that.

All songs with big choruses. My road trips tend to include people singing together so it’s important.
10. Where do you see yourselves in 7 years?
I imagine I will still be playing music in one form or another. If not with Portugal, most definitely something, at least my own music. I will more than likely live somewhere, that is a current goal for me right now. Oh, and I will hopefully have a wife. I always look for wives.
11. What is the last book you read?
Last Exit To Brooklyn by Hubert Selby. It’s some pretty intense stuff.
12. Is image a factor in music or is it a waste of time?
It really depends on the band you are trying to be. If you are a novelty act, such as the Darkness, you couldn’t really get away with looking like a normal dude. If you want your fans to portray you as a normal person (which most are) image isn’t really a big deal. I mean sure, it is great to look nice but it isn’t all that necessary. Weird Al better not stop wearing Hawiian shirts though, that would be devastating.
13. Any embarrassing moments on stage you would like to share?
Oh I have a pretty good one for myself. We were playing a sold out show in Stuttgart, Germany. In the middle of Bellies are Full, John’s vocals stopped working. I ended up going down into the crowd, digging through everyone’s feet, and finding an unplugged cable. I plugged it in and hopped back on stage. I pretty much saved the day and then I fell right on my face. It was pretty priceless. A real bittersweet moment for me.
14. Any favorite tour locations?
Austin, Texas is great. People are really good to us in Texas and on top of that, Austin is just a really cool city. Good vibes, good feelings. Also San Diego is awesome. We generally go to the beach and get breakfast burritos when we have time. Who couldn’t like that? Anywhere in Germany is a favorite place as well. We just feel so lucky that we even have fans over there, it makes every trip to Germany incredible.
15. Lastly, what is your present state of mind?
I am a little jet lagged, kind of tired, a bit scatterbrained. We are in Manchester playing for the first time. I am also really excited, just exhausted. We have a long 5 weeks of touring ahead of us. I am always looking forward to touring, especially new places.

I entered the Outside Lands Festival grounds a bit peeved. See when you try to find a spot at the Lands End stage (Main Stage), people have already claimed seven or more spots with a God damn blanket and their huge lawn chairs (which I thought were banned). So here I am walking on people’s blankets and they’re giving me these dirty looks like I just pooed in their soup. Hey man, you decided to call property on six square feet of lawn and you expect me to tip-toe around your shit? I don’t fuckin’ think so.
Anyway, after pissing off people I could care less about, I caught Zion I perform a moderately fun set. After all it was noon, how much rockin’ can one do? A lot actually, the crowd was pretty into them despite the fact it was majorly filled with camped out Dave Matthews Band fans at the average age of 40 years old. Zion I played mostly new tracks off their new album, The Takeover but I got what I wanted when they performed songs off 2005’s True & Livin‘. Things got crazier when the Oakland’s original ghost rider Mistah F.A.B. showed up to help out with a few songs. A good way to start the day.

I wondered around for an hour and camped in front of the Panhandle Stage to catch Portugal. The Man. While I waited I got to see afro-rock group Extra Golden pump out a few more songs. They seemed very happy to be there and the small crowd they generated were into it I guess. A nice change of sound.
Now I have been trying to see PTM for years now. Ever since 2006’s Waiter: “You Vultures!” I have been trying to see what my friends called “one of the most unexpectedly amazing live bands I have ever seen.” Fair enough. After about three songs into their set, I was convinced.
The band is tight and extremely talented. They create perfect pop songs that blended pretty well with the bright and sunny 80 degree San Francisco weather we were having today. Their early 70’s throwback rock, R&B, and vintage soul with the latest innovations in melodious experimentation proved worthy for this sunny afternoon.
Portugal. The Man – Dawn from Church Mouth (2007)
I had to book it to the Twin Peaks Stage in order to just catch the mighty Mastodon rock the fuck out. Another band I had missed several times, Mastodon brought it today. Opening with songs from this year’s Crack The Skye and gradually breaking into older material showed how the band had evolved as more than just a run-of-the-mill metal act.
The best part of this stage wasn’t just the band though, it was the random moshpits that were sprouting out of nowhere. This was both fun and aggravating for the crowd. I however, was loving it. Watching everyone’s reaction was great and seeing these metalheads clash with these uptight hipster punks was a sight to see. Anyway, Mastodon has a monster presence when they perform and seemed quite happy with the crowd’s enthusiasm. A nice addition being that none of the bands on this year’s line-up sound remotely like them.
Mastodon – Crystal Skull from Blood Mountain (2006)
45 minutes later TV on the Radio performed their last set in a long time (according to them). With Kyp Malone’s much anticipated solo project Rain Machine going on tour soon and the band extensively touring for last year’s Dear Science, they are taking a long much deserved break.
So what we got today was a highly energetic and moving hour long set filled with many songs off the brilliant Dear Science and many lovely familiar tracks like Staring At The Sun and Wolf Like Me. They play fast and slow with an equal amount of passion, and it’s a treat to see both.
TV on the Radio – Staring at the Sun (Woven Remix) from TVOTR Remixes (2004)
I have been a fan of The Mars Volta ever since their formation and had passed up seeing them live until tonight. Here I was, about to see one of my favorite bands of all time rip up the stage like I had dreamed a millions times before. Opening with Goliath off last year’s amazing The Bedlam in Goliath, lead vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala immediately jumped and flopped around on stage all the while still able to hit the high notes.
That’s not all. All within the first song he grabbed the sign displaying their band name on the side of the stage and began to beat the everliving crap out of it. Also, he laid chestdown on the stage and started grabbing the presses’ cameras and singing into them. All the while I was thinking, “If this is what will be going on for the next hour and half….AWESOME!” Well he didn’t exactly go apeshit the whole set but Cedric and the rest of the band were most definitely full of energy for the remainder of the show.
Playing a perfect balance from all five of their albums, including this year’s impressive Octahedron. My “Oh-shit-o-meter” went off the charts when they played my favorite songs off their 2003 masterpiece De-Loused in the Comatorium.
Singing along and freaking out, I came to the quick conclusion that this may be one of the best shows I had ever seen. Now four hours after the show, I’m still pretty certain that what I had just witnessed was not only the best of the festival (sorry Q-Tip), but one of my favorite shows of the year. We’ll see what tomorrow brings, but I’m pretty much sold.

BIG week in the Bay. With several Outside Lands After-parties and the festival itself, there is no shortage of things to do here. Also a visit from Ted Leo, a record release party, and a country music legend stops by an unlikely venue.
Tonight we have The Matches playing the final date off their tour with Judgement Day and Dizzy Balloon at the Fillmore, Six Organs of Admittance and Master Musicians of Bukkake rock The Independent, Fleet Foxes drummer and creator of one of the best albums of 2009, J. Tillman stops by Café du Nord, Jay Reatard does a set at Berkeley’s Amoeba Records at 6pm.
Monday, Ted Leo and The Pharmacists hit up the Bottom of the Hill instead of Treasure Island which they originally intended.
Tuesday features Fruit Bats riding on their new record with Death Vessel at The Independent. The Ruminant Band is a beautiful record full of sweet harmonies and lovely song-writing. Pick it up when you get a chance. Also the amazing Ramona Falls play Café du Nord.
Wednesday will find me at The Fillmore watching dredg, Rx Bandits and As Tall as Lions. All of which have released some pretty impressive albums this year. Also going on is The Dodos and Spencey Dude & the Doodles playing the Rickshaw Stop to kick off Outside Lands fever. Oh yeah and it’s sold out. Bummer.
