Kuestionnaire: One eskimO

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

One Eskimo, a four piece indie rock group from London, England consisting of Kristian Leontiou (vocals), Adam Falkner (drums), Pete Rinaldi (guitar), Jamie Sefton (bass and horns) is a freewheeling act with experimental roots and a desire to bring a soulful side to acoustic instrumentation. With songs like Kandi and Chocolate evincing a spirit born of boundless imagination and a long-standing collaborative relationship. One Eskimo is building a reputation for crafting classic, inward-looking Pop songs highlighted with psychedelic guitars, pastoral sound effects and intricate rhythms. On tunes from their debut, however, One Eskimo steps away from the norm with synthesizers that simultaneously sound brittle and blissful.

One Eskimo will be supporting Gomez at the Great American Music Hall on March 18th. You can win 2 tickets to the show if you comment here. Winner will be announced tomorrow.

This week (as we fly out to SXSW), drummer Adam Falkner answers the Kuestionnaire and shares some great tour locations.

____

1. Could you state your name and what you do in the band?
Hello, I’m Adam from One eskimO. I play percussion.

2. How would you describe your sound?
Warm, woody, acoustic-based pop music wrapped in an ambient blanket.

3. What is your favorite local band?
‘Local’ is hard to ascertain as we’re London-based but have spent most of this and last year in America. The last album I bought was Them Crooked Vultures – looking forward to them at Coachella.

4. Any concerts that blew your mind recently?
It’s been a while but I thoroughly enjoyed Chris Cornell in London a couple of months ago – loads of old Soundgarden stuff and tracks from his first album, and a couple of Led Zep covers too.

5. Any non-musical influences you would like to mention?
As a lyricist, Kristian’s a big film and animation fan, as I think is evident. I think in general you tend to absorb and interpret so many non-musical experiences that go on around you. As jazz musicians used to say, you should ‘Play the day’.

6. What musician/artist would you like to collaborate with for a day?
I think we all have a range of varying people we’d like to collaborate with, but Joni Mitchell would be at the top of my list, along with Kelly Joe Phelps.

7. What is the album you listen to on a cold rainy day?
Donny Hathaway Live, or Largo by a pianist called Brad Mehldau are great rainy day albums for me.

8. List four songs you would listen to on a roadtrip?
In the last few weeks in the van, it’s been Regulate by Warren G, I Keep Forgetting by Michael Macdonald, Don’t Stop Believing by Journey, and an album by some friends of ours called Hempolics.

9. Where do you see yourselves in 7 years?
I couldn’t possibly answer that in a snappy sentence.

10. What is the last book you read?
Any Human Heart by William Boyd. I loved it to the point of that I’m missing it now. I finished it last week in a cafe in Chicago and was sobbing into my oatmeal.

11. Is image a factor in music or is it a waste of time?
It’s inescapable in such multimedia-driven times, so you might as well create something with integrity that you’re proud of, as we did with our animation, otherwise it’s a wasted opportunity to do something interesting.

12. Any embarrassing moments on stage you would like to share?
We played a show at the Fillmore Theatre in Miami supporting Tori Amos last year. I tend to play with my eyes closed but halfway through Kandi I heard several thousand people audibly gasp and opened my eyes to see my whole drumkit collapsing to the ground. Obviously there was no option other to stop, but to make things worse, as my sampler (that is attached to the kit) hit the ground, it randomly fired off a cheesy funk drum loop. It was awesome.

13. Any favorite tour locations?
We’ve seen so much of America recently and played in all sorts of fantastic venues. Some highlights that spring to mind are Humphrey’s in San Diego last year – it’s an outdoor gig on the edge of a harbour, so you see people rowing in on little boats to watch the gig then disappear as soon as it’s finished! Radio City in New York was great, just because of its long history, but I think I equally enjoyed The Living Room for different reasons.

Just last week we had a couple of great gigs in Madison, Wisconsin and in Minneapolis supporting Gomez that we really enjoyed. One of the great things about doing this is that you can never really plan when you’re going to have a great gig; they just happen, and it’s brilliant to be pleasantly surprised by that or to have your preconceptions of a place challenged. I’d barely heard of Spokane or Akron but we turned up and had fantastic gigs at both, so I guess always being open-minded is key.

14. Lastly, what is your present state of mind?
Yesterday we had a massive diversion and consequently a 15-hour drive to Aspen but we just had this morning off so we went skiing, which we’re still buzzing from. However, we are now in the middle of an 8-hour drive to Salt Lake City, so I have conflicting states-of-mind at present. I’ll settled with Contented.

Kuestionnaire: Sole and the Skyrider Band

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

In the year 1998, Sole joined Pedestrian to kick start the Anticon label powerhouse you know today. Years later Sole took the underground by storm with an undeniable stage presence and his critically acclaimed albums, particularly the amazing Selling Live Water. The impact was unquestionable and that next year Sole solidified his place amongst the independent hip hop elite with both his respected label and his impressive body of work.

This time around, Sole is ready to take the world by storm with Sole & the Skyrider Band. After already redefining the scene with their debut in 2007, Sole along with the Skyrider Band, Bud Berning (producer), John Wagner (drums), and William Ryan Fritch (multi-instrumentalist), along with guests like Markus Acher from 13 & God and The Notwist, present the long awaited sophomore full-length album Plastique. It’s as imaginative, experimental, diverse and genre-defying as ever, but what did you expect?

Kuestionnaire: Ladyhawk

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

With a name that is easily confused with the pop artist of the same name, Ladyhawk is a confident and devilishly amazing rock band formed in 2004. Their 2008 album, Shots has an “off the stage” feel and vigor that is reminiscent of the band’s powerful live performances. Rooted from the recording sessions, everything bred from and expanded from there. The record packs grit while allowing the bands infectious energy and vulnerability to flow freely. In 2008 the band was nominated for a CBC Award for Best Live Act, one of Canada’s highest honors in the national music scene.

While the band may not be touring or even hinting anything new as of late. With the Winter Games over, I thought I’d remind people of one of my favorite Vancouver bands.

So this week lead singer and guitarist Duffy Driediger takes a break from writing about horror movies on his blog to fill out the Kuestionnaire.

____

1. Could you state your name and what you do in the band?
my name is duffy and i write songs and sing and play the guitar. i also whine and complain about everything, get too drunk to perform properly on occasion (on stage and elsewhere) and refuse to drive the van.

2. How would you describe your sound?
two guys playing electric guitars through amplifiers, one strumming crude rhythmic changes at a relatively loud volume while singing/bellowing into a microphone and the other playing high pitched lead lines at ear-shattering levels, while another guy plods along on an electric bass and behind him a guy crashes on the drums, squawking into a microphone periodically.

3. What is your favorite local band?
i really love this band called SCOUNDRELS, but they’ve never actually played a show, so maybe they don’t count. other than that, i like NO KIDS, SUN WIZARD, FEAR OF TOMORROW, BOGUS TOKUS… to be honest, i don’t really know that many local bands these days. i’m out of the loop, i guess.

4. Any concerts that blew your mind recently?
we just played a couple shows with THE CONSTANTINES to celebrate their 10th anniversary, those shows were pretty hot. i saw PIERCED ARROWS twice last year and both those shows were completely face-melting. THE PET SHOP BOYS were amazing.

5. Any non-musical influences you would like to mention?
horror movies, drugs and french cuisine.

6. If your music was to be the theme of a film/TV show, what would it be?
cancelled.

7. What musician/artist would you like to collaborate with for a day?
fred cole (dead moon, pierced arrows) or lindsey buckingham. both would be cool…

8. What is the album you listen to on a cold rainy day?
grateful dead- live dead

9. List four songs you would listen to on a roadtrip?
lindsey buckingham- “holiday road”
anything by creedence clearwater revival
misfits- “skulls”
neil young- “roll another number (for the road)”

10. Where do you see yourselves in 7 years?
who knows? fatter, older, probably not making anything close to decent, relevent music…

11. What is the last book you read?
anthony bourdain “kitchen confidential”

12. Is image a factor in music or is it a waste of time?
obviously. is it a waste of time? not if it’s working for you.

13. Any embarrassing moments on stage you would like to share?
isn’t it all kind of embarrassing? there are just too many moments to mention…
pretty much any time we’ve played in seattle or montreal.

14. Any favorite tour locations?
toronto, saskatoon, new orleans, madison, o.k. city, basically anywhere there are nice people that like our band.

15. Lastly, what is your present state of mind?
thirsty.

Kuestionnaire: Picture Atlantic

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

by Aaron Blumenshine

by Aaron Blumenshine

As led by singer/pianist/guitarist Nikolaus Bartunek, the maturity of Picture Atlantic’s songwriting stems from how much of a history nerd Nik is. Fortunately, the results are exciting. Based in Santa Clara, CA, the band started as a collaboration of various local hardcore band members and developed into an uplifting and mature rock band. Nik’s songwriting meshed well with the addition of his friends, and the band courted its first fans with an EP release. Change is Welcome thus appeared in 2006 as a self released EP. With the EP out, Picture Atlantic began playing shows around the Northwest and added keyboardist Brian Graves to the mix. Buzz about the band’s music began creating a stir beyond the Bay Area, and the guys won the chance to open for Coldplay at the San Jose HP Pavilion. 2008 resulted the full length Kleos and was issued by June, offering up a poignant collection of memorable hooks and thoughtful narratives that showcased a similar style to acts like the Weakerthans and Death Cab for Cutie. A second EP, Dulce Et Decorum Est, is already prepped for an April 2010 release, and the band remains posed and ready for tomorrow’s event as well as their EP Listening Show on Friday, February 26th at the Vintage Faith Church in their hometown of Santa Cruz, CA.

You can catch Picture Atlantic in our Noise Pop co-sponsored show featuring Far, Trophy Fire, and Stomacher at the Bottom of the Hill at 8pm Thursday.

Today we have both lead vocalist Nikolaus Bartunek and bassist Ryan Blair answering this special Kuestionnaire and giving a lenghtly yet interesting take on the subject of image and it’s impact.

____

1. Could you state your name and what you do in the band?
My name is Nik, and I’m the vocalist, and play guitar/piano
My name is Ryan and I play bass and assorted goofy instruments like the Kalimba

2. How would you describe your sound?
Nik
: I try not to. A question like that is a bear trap for musicians. You either make yourself sound awful, or people think you’re being pretentious. But to be fair, I think we are some sort of rock band.

3. What is your favorite local band?
Nik
: Hands down I would say the band PK. They are from San Louis Obispo. The singer’s lyrics are really up there in the the “lyric echelon”. I guess for a band that is closer to home, SF’s Ghost in the City is fantastic. Great band. Great lyrics. No one is doing what they are doing in the Bay. They are amazing people as well.

4. Any concerts that blew your mind recently?
Ryan: I just saw St. Vincent at the Great American Music Hall and she put on an amazing show. Annie Clark is hands down the best guitarist I’ve ever seen live, though I’ve yet to see Blur in concert.
Nik: I’m going to see the National in May. I’m pretty sure my mind will be blown.

5. Any non-musical influences you would like to mention?
Nik
: There are some authors that influence, if you can believe it. H.P. Lovecraft. Wilfred Owen was a poet that recently I’ve gained a lot of inspiration from. Arthur C. Clarke is amazing, and I’ve really loved his work. I’m a scifi nerd.

6. If your music was to be the theme of a film/TV show, what would it be?
Nik: Either Dynasty or Eastenders

7. What musician/artist would you like to collaborate with for a day?
Ryan: Damon Albarn or that guy from Seona Dancing.
Nik: To be realistic, I’d have to say Damon too. He is a creative guy.

8. What is the album you listen to on a cold rainy day?
Ryan
: Coldplay’s “Parachutes” is the quintessential rainy day album for me.
Nik: Pedro The Lion’s album “Control” is sort of my rainy day album. It really can’t be beat for a beard-dad indie music philosophy session.

9. List four songs you would listen to on a roadtrip?
Nik
: Turn the Dirt Over by Seawolf, Glowing Logos by The Servant, Racing Like a Pro by The National, and Hunter’s Map by Fionn Regan

10. Where do you see yourselves in 7 years?
Nik
: God willing, I will be doing music of some sort. If not music, I will probably be a stock broker.

11. What is the last book you read?
Nik
: The Crystal Shard by R.A. Salvatore

12. Is image a factor in music or is it a waste of time?
Nik
. Here we go. Get ready for my novel. To be one hundred honest with you, the guys in our band like to dress nice. I’m not saying Prince nice, but presentable. Thankfully for us, Image has become a factor in the music industry , so since we enjoy wearing what we think to be our best clothes, it works out, but in my opinion has nothing to do with Music itself. I try to dress the way I want to dress, and not care too much. Recently I’ve gotten a lot of flack from people for looking like a “substitute teacher”. It didn’t keep me from wearing what I wear.To some extent, it is a complete waste of time. I’d hope that people could hear our music, without seeing a picture of me, Ryan, or anyone else, and make up their mind about it with out a visual reference card. Lots of bands have atrocious image anyways. Its like watching that movie “Toys” with Robin Williams.

13. Any embarrassing moments on stage you would like to share?
Nik: Not that I can remember. I’ve snapped some mic stands on stage. I’m waiting for my day when I fall off the stage.

14. Any favorite tour locations?
Nik
: Vintage Faith Church in Santa Cruz is amazing. I love that place. Its got a great feel. Besides, you always feel safer in a church.

15. Lastly, what is your present state of mind?
Nik: I’m assuming you mean at the moment. Well, to be honest I’m pretty tired. The band has been working really hard lately, and I’ve had a lot of work to do on my end. Its sort of discouraging actually. Not to sound negative, but I’d say my state of mind has been discouraged. So much music is going on in the world. It makes one feel small. Don’t take that as my white flag. I haven’t given up. I’m hopeful for the future at the same time.

[mp3] Picture Atlantic – Circe from Kleos (2008)

Kuestionnaire: Stomacher

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

First formed as a metal act called In Reverent Fear, Stomacher rapidly decided to solidly evolve into a more relaxed and atmospheric rock sounding group. Performing regularly all across the Bay Area, Stomacher have succeeded in gaining a considerable fan legion. If you mention the phrase, “atmospheric rock” you have an enormously wide spectrum to imagine what the music may sound like. But, in this case, I will let myself use these two words to describe Stomacher’s latest offering, their debut 2009 release Sentimental Education. Think a stiffer Depeche Mode, or possibly Porcupine Tree with more emphasis on songwriting and vocals in an almost singer/songwriter fashion. Stomacher has became less aggressive and more melodic, eventually abandoning their hardcore roots in favor of progressive, experimental space rock, much as Cave In had done. A welcome change for a band showing some amazing potential.

You can catch Stomacher in our Noise Pop co-sponsored show featuring Far, Trophy Fire, and Picture Atlantic at the Bottom of the Hill at 8pm Thursday.

This week drummer John Lazarus enters the Kuestionnaire to hype up this week’s amazing show.

____

1. Could you state your name and what you do in the band?
I’m John, drummer for Stomacher.

2. How would you describe your sound?
Stomacher is a rock band at heart. Many of the songs dip into down-tempo, ambient kinda grooves. For the most part, Stomacher aims to make memorable pop songs. The emphasis is the melody (Jarrod).

3. What is your favorite local band?
My favorite local bands right now include: Via Coma, I the Mighty, and Monkey.

4. Any concerts that blew your mind recently?
Brian Blade fellowship at Yoshi’s Oakland. Unreal.

5. Any non-musical influences you would like to mention?
Any writing from Shunryu Suzuki. I love Quentin Tarantino’s work.

6. If your music was to be the theme of a film/TV show, what would it be?
I would like to see our music featured in a Harry Potter film. Check out our new HP-themed video (shameless plug).

7. What musician/artist would you like to collaborate with for a day?
I would love to work with Prince.

8. What is the album you listen to on a cold rainy day?
D’Angelo – Voodoo

9. List four songs you would listen to on a roadtrip?
Miles Davis Quintet – Straight, No Chaser
Jill Scott – Gettin’ In The Way
Elbow – I’ve Got Your Number
Motley Crue – Kick-start My Heart

10. Where do you see yourselves in 7 years?
Making new records. Touring Europe, UK, and US. That would be sweet.

11. What is the last book you read?
US: Americans Talk About Love

12. Is image a factor in music or is it a waste of time?
Depends who you ask. I think quality music will trump image any day, which isn’t to say that image has no place in the entertainment business…

13. Any embarrassing moments on stage you would like to share?
Not really :) They certainly happen to all of us. You gotta just see it for yourself.

14. Any favorite tour locations?
Kansas City, MO.
Berkeley, CA.
Santa Rosa, CA

15. Lastly, what is your present state of mind?
Kinda sleepy. Time for bed. We hope to see you at the show! Thanks for reading.

(Special Edition!) Kuestionnaire: Boy in the Bubble

Friday, February 19th, 2010

This week I posted about Bay Area based band, Boy in the Bubble, who had their last record played on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic. The band will be hosting a record release party tonight at Bottom of the Hill with Birdmonster,  Here Come The Saviors, and the reunited Girl Band. Which means you now have something to do tonight!

The new record, entitled The King, is a 5×7 illustrated book chock full of song download codes. Avoiding the boring and inevitable death of CDs, Boy in the Bubble went above and beyond by emphasizing their imagination and creativity with this colorful and fun little book/record.

So make your way to the Bottom of the Hill tonight and pick up a copy. Not only is the package amazing, the record is ridiculously awesome as well.

So today we have lead vocalist and mastermind behind BITB Josh Seidenfeld answer a special Kuestionnaire just before he hits the stage tonight to rock the fuck out! Enjoy!

____

1. Could you state your name and what you do in the band?
Josh Seidenfeld – I sing, play guitar, and write songs.

2. How would you describe your sound?
I always ask people to help me with that because it’s really hard to do, like cutting your own hair. People say: John Lennon and other Beatles stuff, Bowie, someone said “Lou Reed if he sang more in tune.”

3. What is your favorite local band?
Carne Cruda

4. Any concerts that blew your mind recently?
Vidya at Yoshi’s. They’re trained in both Indian classical music and in jazz and play a fusion of the two, which could go horribly wrong, but they pull it off really artfully. There’s a place in the world for bringing together different styles of music – you just have to do it right, and they do. And I think their drummer, Samir Gupta, is the messiah.

5. Any non-musical influences you would like to mention?
YES YES YES! I’m so glad you asked that because lately the things that influence me the most aren’t music. I have a lot of friends who are fiction writers and they keep the bar really high for creating characters and stories people will care about. I love to read and steal shamelessly from what I read; 3 of the songs on the new record are drawn directly from others’ fiction and nonfiction. “In the Company Town” is based on King Leopold’s Ghost by Adam Hochschild, and “Telescope” is based on a short story by Diana Lind.

6. If your music was to be the theme of a film/TV show, what would it be?
I can tell you, with some regret, that it probably won’t be gay porn. Our old drummer’s cousin is a gay porn star and wanted to take his company legit by making a video for us. The result was three days of shooting, among other things: a guy with really hot abs and our drummer making out with her girlfriend in the shower. Sounds awesome right? But it just didn’t quite work, mostly because a gay porn star does not a director make.

7. What musician/artist would you like to collaborate with for a day?
Bob Dylan, hands down. He’s kind of like the Pope to me.

8. What is the album you listen to on a cold rainy day?
Money Jungle – Duke Ellington, and Mingus plays on it.

9. List four songs you would listen to on a roadtrip?
Welcome to the Jungle – G’n’R
Blues in the Night – just about any version from 1950 – 1970
All You Need is Love – Beatles
There is a Light That Never Goes Out – Smiths

10. Where do you see yourselves in 7 years?
Right here in Oakland, hopefully having made a few more records and helped to make a couple kids.

11. What is the last book you read?
Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood

12. Is image a factor in music or is it a waste of time?
Both! But if anyone tells you playing rock music on a stage isn’t theater they’re lying. And part of theater is dressing up, so you gotta have fun with that part of it – I love that stuff. Unfortunately the people who are really good at dressing up usually get more attention than the people who are really good at making music!

13. Any embarrassing moments on stage you would like to share?
Pretty much every time I played until a couple years ago when I started to feel like I knew what I was doing.

14. Any favorite tour locations?
I played a pub in London called Filthy McNasty’s. That was pretty rad mostly because of the name, but also because a ton of Americans showed up to see a guy from California play and sing. I guess people get really homesick in London because they speak a different language?

15. Lastly, what is your present state of mind?
A little manic! Our record’s coming out with a big release party this Friday (Tonight!) at Bottom of the Hill, and my wife’s pregnant and about to burst with our first baby, so things are a little crazy!
