The 13th Annual Mission Creek Music Festival kicks off today in San Francisco with some pretty exciting names. Having a long standing record at breaking new and exciting acts over the years, MCM Fest is still delivering some of the best in the Bay and International acts.

Today we have The Aerosols with Dream Date, My First Earthquake, and Sonny & The Sunsets at Knockout, Collosal Yes with The Love Dimension , 123 Picnic , and Nick Jaina at El Rio, darwinsbitch with 0th , NIM , Hora Flora , and DJ Koloni at The Lab, and The Double U with Top Critters , The Jen Weisberg Experience , and The Why Because at Argus.

Thursday features the wonderful Thee Oh Sees with Fresh and Onlys , Meth Teeth , Buzzer , and Ty Segall at Eagle, The Lumerians with Graveyard , and Citadelle at Cafe Du Nord, Ryder Cooley with MAG , Christine Shields , and DJ Koloni at The Lab, Brandon Nickell with Al Qaeda , Horseflesh , and Weird Habit at Argus, and Carola Zertuche at Pena Pachamama.

Friday rocks out with goth rockers Evangelista with Oaxacan , Limosine , Art Lessing and the Flower Vato at Eagle, Ann Magnuson with Dynasty Handbag , Curly Lou , and DJ Koloni at The Lab, Jack Curtis Dubowsky Ensemble at the ATA, Casy and Brian with Unicorn Basement , Kitten Forever , and Elle Nino at Kimo’s, and the AlterLatino Rock Showcase features Ink Blots with Dezu , Con of Man , Los Valenberg , Sagval , Qodice , and Tierra y Fuego at the Oakland Metro Opera House.

Saturday, marks the free McLaren Park show with Dead Meadow, Kelley Stoltz , Persephone’s Bees , The Rubies , Bart Davenport , Xoel Lopez , Leopold & His Fiction , The Moore Brothers , Birds & Batteries , and Coatsie & Mellows at 4:00 pm. Also, we have Zachary Watkins with Gerritt Wittmer and Paul Knowles , Jim Haynes , and The Toilet at The Lab, and the Benefit for Mission Creek Music & Arts Festival with Juan Son, Nacotheque , Pop Noir , and DJ Fancy Guey at Blue Macaw.

Sunday is the Performer Magazine Showcase with Fauna Valetta, Branden Daniel , Old Stoic , and Mode at Kimo’s, string metal sensation Judgement Day with Triclops! , and The Definite Articles at the Bottom of the Hill, the Mission Creek Meet & Greet Poolside Party with Xoel Lopez and Craig Ventresco at the Bambuddha Lounge.

Monday just has Miranda Lee Richards with Emily Jane White , Helene Renaut , and Chloe Makes Music at the Cafe Du Nord.

Tuesday features Inca Ore with Ora Cogan , Black Bow , and The Sarees at Argus, Brian Glaze and the Night Shift with Sam Flax & Higher Color , Seam Smith & the Present Moment , Greg Ashley , and Chris Lacey at Cafe Du Nord and Hot Lunch with Paula Frazer , Casual Fog , and Jeff Ramuno at Knockout.

Wednesday, rocks out with 3 Leafs, Long Legged Woman , Jaws , Sex Worker , and DJ Tristes Tropiques at El Rio, Warpaint with Xoel Lopez , White Music , Moonrats at Knockout, The Mantles with Honey , and The Sandwitches at Hotel Utah, and Arachnid Arcade with Shygrape , Kwisp , and HansHeadGrŸselBoggle at Argus.

Friday, has Thorny Brocky with Reverent Sisters , Ramon and Jessica , and Poor Sweet Creatures at the Socha Cafe, Hard Place with Harry Merry , Agent Ribbons , and Franklin’s Mint at Knockout, Shimomitsu with Softserv at Adobe, The Drums with Wendy Farina , Improv Trio: William Wnany, Weasel Walter, Moe Staiano , and Jason Gonzales at Argus, and finally Hunx and his Punx rocks out with Icy Lytes , and Myles at the El Rio.

Saturday featues the “Awesome Bands Names Showcase” (I made that up) with T.I.T.S., KIT , The Amazements , White Pee , and Wiggwaum at Bay Area 51.

Happy Record Store Day! So what’s going on in your neighborhood? Here in the bay we’ve got Amoeba Records hosting Kylee of Loquat at 2pm, Kelley Stoltz at 3pm, John Vanderslice’s DJ Set at 4pm, and Aesop Rock’s DJ set at 5pm. Up at the Rasputin Berkley, Silversun Pickups play at 4pm and Mr. Loveless play Rasputin Concord at 5pm.
Oh and here’s my favorite quote on Record Store Day by Gavin Hayes of dredg, “Record stores are cultural gathering places where people go to share a common interest…their love for music. They are nostalgia and hot summer days. Record stores are ditching class to buy a record the day it comes out. They are Amoeba, Rasputin, and Aquarius and the distinct smell of the old records in the basement of the local mom and pop store. The record store is Run DMC on cassette tape. They are Iron Maiden posters, metal t-shirts and the magazine rack. The record store is a yellow and red Tower Records bag littered with CD labels. They are the listening stations, in store performances/signings, and staff recommendations. They are the used and local section and the free publications and zines at the front door. They are distributors of a product made up of dreams, effort, and heart that have the capability to change lives and outlooks, determine individuality, and divide or unite.

Oh and this one by Patton Oswalt, “The idea of, ‘The journey is the destination’ is put into action by browsing in an indie record store. Besides, a human being is a much better guide than a ‘More Like This’ link on the internet.”

A handful of exciting releases this past Tuesday.We’ve got The Boy Least Likely To’s The Law Of The Playground, Ida Maria’s Fortress Round My Heart, Metric’s Fantasies, Papercuts’ You Can Have What You Want, Silversun Pickups’ Swoon, and Medeski Martin & Wood’s Radiolarians II. I highly recommend the new Metric and Papercuts albums. In fact, I’ve really been digging Papercuts with their Dinosaur Jr meets Notwist sound. Plus they’re local, so that’s a plus.

Atmospheric rock band Water & Bodies (ex-Kaddisfly) have released some new tunes and they seem to be finding their niche. I hear potential, but these tracks still need to grow on me. We’ll see…
Jeremy Enigk has released yet another song entitled Life’s Too Short from his upcoming album, OK Bear on his myspace page. The vocals are similar to Return Of The Frog Queen but the song is way heavier than anything off Frog Queen. I am loving this direction he’s going in. May 12th Baby!
As previously posted on Stranger Dance; local venues like Bottom of the Hill, Great American Music Hall, Slim’s and Café du Nord might have to be forced to shut down unless they can meet the ABC’s requirement stating that half of their sales come from food. However, according to this recent article at SFgate, it seems as though there will be some peace and understanding among the ABC and San Francisco business owners. Including talks of a new type of license. This is very good news for the Bay Area concert goer, so we’ll see what happens over the next few weeks.
