SXSW 2010 Announce Schedule

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

The dates: March 17-21. On those days hundreds upon hundreds of bands from across the world will descend upon Austin, Texas for SXSW, and I among others will be scrambling to see every band we can without passing out.

This will be my first time at SXSW and from what I hear, it’s impossible to see all the bands I want. So I’ve divided them out and decided to see bands I’ve never seen before and ditch the ones I already have. Well as of today, SXSW posted the schedules for all five days of showcases on their website.

I’ll be ‘working’ while I’m at SXSW, meaning I’ll be telling you my experience at this clusterfuck of a festival. So stay tuned, this is going to be fun!

Kata Rokkar at Comic-Con 2009

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Here’s my best attempt at explaining what happen this past weekend at the San Diego Comic-Con for us…

  1. I missed the Avatar screening but from what I’ve heard it was phenomenal. Welcome back, James Cameron.
  2. Got to see Terry Gilliam and Vern Troyer talk about Heath Ledger’s last film and see some unreleased footage involving Tom Waits as Satan. It looks….okay, the special effects need work and it’s a bit over-the-top. We’ll see what happens with this…
  3. There’s this movie called Pandorum coming out that looks like garbage.
  4. There’s this movie called Kick-Ass coming out that looks FUCKING AWESOME! Think if Mystery Men and Superbad combined into a film that was actually funny, Seriously, this looks good.
  5. After standing on line for hours, we got to sit on the District 9 panel. Which at first seemed like a bad idea to replace the Halo movie. But it isn’t. District 9 looks like the movie of the year. I am not exaggerating. Probably the best Science Fiction film of our generation. Take my word for it, this is going to be huge.
  6. We got to hear Peter Jackson & James Cameron talk for an hour about film and the importance of characters, story, and a thick plot. Highlight: A fan stands and says in the Q&A, “… Michael Bay…” *(booo hisssss)* “Wait wait, I know where I’m going with this”
  7. We missed Iron Man 2 but whatever. There’s always this. (saw Favreau though)
  8. We got badges that said ‘Professional’ (no, it didn’t get us 1st class access or laid)
  9. 2 New Words Learned: Swag (free shit you’ll never keep) and Cosplay (people dressing up as Superheroes or whatever)
  10. Watching people dressed up in costume and playing Rock Band can be extremely entertaining.
  11. The new Green Hornet car looks really cool
  12. There’s this Cube car that’s the very definition of ‘Fugly
  13. Saw Jennifer Carpenter, Megan Fox, Jimmy Fallon, Adam West, Brent Spiner and Leonard Nimoy
  14. I thought this was really cool
  15. Twilight is gay.
  16. Scott (cribble) screened his filmShe Farted and Created the World” to a 1/4 filled convention room but ended up getting a rave response with a few questions on the film and the story behind it. It went over well. So well that people were hounding him for free buttons and stickers. Well done!
  17. STAR WARS! How cares right? Well apparently people still do and we weren’t one of them. But the crowd in Hall H went apeshit over the Star Wars Concert coming soon thanks to hype-master, voice of C-3PO and utter pretencious boob Anthony Daniels. Luckily Attack of  the Show hosts Kevin Pereira and Olivia Munn made light of the hype by subtley poking fun at the cast of The Clone Wars and Mr. “Human Cyborg Relations” Daniels.
  18. Tori Amos is an indie music icon. Who knew?
  19. I don’t know what this is…
  20. I got attacked by this monster beetle who wanted to eat my bag for some reason (better my bag than my face)
  21. L. Ron Hubbard has comic books! This was a conversation I had with the lady at the desk, Lady at Desk: “Are you a fan of his work?’ Me: “Oh absolutely! I have them all.” Lady at Desk: “really?!?!” Me: “Oh yeah!” Lady at Desk: “Do you want a poster?” Me: “No”
  22. Saw a MF Doom mask and was about to buy it before I realized how bizarre it would look in my carry-on bag.

Kata Rokkar Presents…Gifts From Enola / Glaciers / Winfred E. Eye

Friday, July 10th, 2009

designed by Scott O'Hara

Gifts From Enola

Sometimes Virginia based instrumental act Gifts From Enola start with a whisper and end with a scream, but on their latest album, ‘From Fathoms’, they begin with a scream and proceed into a symphonic odyssey that Aaron Copland might have composed if he’d played electric guitar. The sophomore effort from this band of epic-style prog-rockers, ‘From Fathoms’ was released on June 9th–and changes all preexisting assumptions of what ‘experimental post rock’ is supposed to sound like. Intense, instrumental music infused with fatalistic affect, this is a requiem for a planet. Expressionist, it recalls a simmering Arctic landscape placid for days, suddenly punctuated by a punishing electrical storm. Playing like a symphony in eight movements, the album is composed entirely of bass, guitar, and drums. A moody but gorgeous album infused with youthful sincerity, it is cinematic in scope with soothing soundscapes of atmospheric, ambient, and shimmering chimes interspersed with crashing interludes of heavy metal-style guitar explosions and drums with intricate time signatures. File under post-rock . . . or modern composition.

Glaciers

Glaciers is the project of British musician and illustrator Nicolas Burrows, based in Leeds, UK and Montreal, QC. The material was originally initiated to create songs for a 6-track ep, released on Nous Vous Press in 2007. Glaciers is intended to be a collaborative musical outfit, with contributors so far including Mike Payne (Mechanical Owl), William Edmonds (VFT) and Katie Harkin (Sky Larkin). The songs are often based on sketchbook material built up over several months and eventually worked into songs. He is currently already working on his next album with Mike Payne as of May 11th. We look forward to see what arises.

Winfred E. Eye

Oakland based act Winfred E. Eye’s (which is actually 4 guys) music defies description except to say it is coming from somewhere steeped in early blues with a Neil Young overlay and the feel of country, blues, pop, and folk. Some would point to Tom Waits and others as Winfred E. Eye’s forbearers, but the muse here is genuinely unique and the sounds are those that only budding geniuses could make. Winfred E. Eye’s music features deft, poised guitar playing, vivid lyrical imagery, and melodies that burrow into your brain–as if they’d been there all along.

And here…we…go!

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Welcome all to the resurrection of Kata Rokkar. We did some obvious renovating as well as an address change. Many thanks go the Scott Coello for this amazing design. As some older readers may know, we were having some hosting problems, but that has since passed. This is the dawn of a new era! In the past few months, I have personally gone through some major changes. For one, I have moved from Newburyport, MA to sunny San Rafael, CA. 3000 miles away from the people I love. This is both a scary and exciting experience for me. I hardly know anyone out here, but I’m excited to see where things go at this juncture. Secondly, I lost two of my best friends in an instant. No, they’re not dead. It was an act of betrayal and selfishness on their part that showed me their true colors. I have since been trying to cope with the whole ordeal. However, it’s been interesting to find who’s willing to help you through events like this.

You find friends in the weirdest places…

Anyway, let’s get things started! Since this is the very first post on the new site, I might as well start fresh with the rules (booooo). Shut up.

#1: This is not a free mp3 blog. I do not post full albums or give out links to illegally download full albums. The full songs I post are for promotional use only. If you like what you hear, do the artist a favor and purchase their record or attend their shows. The bands and artists here make a living creating wonderful music, so please support them.

#2: If you are a band or label that wants me to hear your music, send it! However, don’t be insulted if your band isn’t posted the day you send the email. I get tied up and sometimes I can’t get to all of them. Maybe your band wasn’t that good to begin with. I don’t know. But I’ll be sure to send you an email letting you know that I have posted about your band/artist. Just be patient.

#3: Insulting and spam will not be tolerated. If you aren’t happy with what I said or what someone said, think of some kind of articulate way of explaining why. Also, I take constructive criticism well. If you have suggestions, feel free to let me know.

#4: If you are a record company that is pissed that I posted a song, tell me first! Don’t go and be a jerk and try to get me in trouble. I only posted the song to help the artist. So if you want me to take it down, I will remove it without question. No middle man involved.

#5: Tell all your friends about me! I started this blog to let people know that there is a whole new world of talented musicians out there. If you think a friend of yours may like what’s posted here. Share the link. The more the merrier.

That’s about it. I’m still doing Kuestionnaires with artists, I will be reporting from the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco this weekend, I have tons of pent up awesomeness heading your way. Stay tuned, there is so much more to come….
