A Post Hardcore Frankenstein Monster

Rival Schools is more or so a clusterfuck of ex-hardcore band members, crafted into a sharp, fun, rock band. No gimmicks, nothing fancy; just an amazing band that unfortunately graced the music scene for a short time…until now. Rival Schools recently reunited to perform at the Rock Am Ring in Germany, Hove Festival in Norway, the Download Festival in the United Kingdom, and are now headlining their own U.S. tour. Not only that, but they have reported that they’re writing new material. The band itself consists of singer/guitarist Walter Schreifels (Gorilla Biscuits/Youth of Today/Quicksand/Walking Concert), guitarist Ian Love (Cartel/Burn), bassist Cache Tolman (Iceburn/Institute), and drummer Sam Siegler (CIV/Youth of Today/Judge/Nightmare of You). Rival Schools only released on full length album (United by Fate) and a split EP with Jonah Matranga’s Onelinedrawing (Rival Schools United by Onelinedrawing). United by Fate was a one of my favorite rock records of 2001 and still finds its way back into my car stereo to this day. Their second unfinished and unnamed album, which has been wandering around the internet for 4 years, doesn’t come close to the magic that United by Fate cast. This is a band that has already proven its potential; it’s about time they came out of hiding to show the rest of you how special they really are.

US Tour

Nov. 3: Philadelphia (Khyber)
Nov. 4: Hoboken, N.J. (Maxwell’s)
Nov. 5: Baltimore (Ottobar)

Rivals Unite!

Well it looks as though Walter, Ian, Cache, and Sammy have all gotten together again for some sweet rock lovin’. The band known as Rival Schools has been touring Europe’s festival scene most of this summer but recently the band has been so kind as to let us Americans hear some new material as well as give a us a little west and east coast tour. I have been a huge fan of both Ian’s and Walter projects over the years and Rival Schools is by far my favorite. I was so sad that their one album (United by Fate) and E.P. (Rival Schools United by Onelinedrawing) was all that was left of a band that had so much potential. Now with their somewhat new-ish song, “Sweet” being displayed here and their impending tour dates (which is also on their myspace), I have further hope that this band is finally realizing how special they are. I hope you can see it as well.
