This Week In Bay Area Live Shows: May 10th – 16th

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Before I mention this week’s line-up, I would just like to let everyone know that the Cornelius and Deerhoof show at the Fillmore on Tuesday is cancelled due to…erm….Swine Flu. But no matter, there’s plenty going on this week to keep you occupied.

Tonight we’ve got avant-garde freaks Sleepytime Gorilla Museum at the Great American Music Hall and The Dead (yes, THAT Dead) play the Shoreline Amphitheatre. Monday, Scottish indie pop group The Vaselines hit up Bimbo’s 365 and instru-metal band North plays The Full House in Oakland. Tuesday features noise-pop acts Ponytail and Cryptacize at the Bottom of the Hill and the always amazing Cloud Cult play The Independent. Wednesday has blues-rocker Michelle Malone’s CD Release party at the Café du Nord. Thursday, we have doom metal giants Opeth and Enslaved at the The Regency Center Ballroom and Janeane Garofalo at Cobb’s Comedy Club. Friday we have Loney, Dear at the Bottom of the Hill, The Avett Brothers and Magnolia Electric Co. play both Friday and Saturday at the Fillmore. On Saturday M. Ward does the Fox Theatre in Oakland, Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s perform at the The Great American Music Hall, and I’ll be folking it up with Sean Hayes and The Botticellis at The Independent.

See you out there!

I forgot how much I loved this guy. Dark atmospheric electronic music will always have a special place in my heart.

Odd Nosdam – Fat Hooks

Taking indie rock by storm yet again; +/- are back with their fun and dreamy album, Xs on Your Eyes.

+/- – Snowblind

“It took me years for these words,” Bound Stems lead vocalist Bobby Gallivan hollers, “years to admit I was RIGHT!” Probably one of my favorite songs of the year.

Bound Stems – Happens to Us All Otherwise

With his lazy acoustic melodies and relaxing vocals, Palenville, NY’s A.A. Bondy paints the upstate NY picture so well. Personally growing up in that region, I hear something familiar. It sounds like home.

A.A. Bondy – There’s a Reason

Wilderness is music for those of you who want a soundtrack to the calm of a Sunday evening. They create building psychedelic landscapes and move you slowly without you knowing the journey they have taken you on. Pack lightly…

Wilderness – Strand The Test of Time

Indie pop never sounded so beautiful and loving. It didn’t take long for me to enjoy Deerhoof’s new album. If you listen you’ll understand why.

Deerhoof – Offend Maggie

Since Death From Above 1979 won’t be coming back anytime soon, we at least have ex-drummer/vocalist Sebastien Grainger to enjoy. More soulful and less insane than DFA79, it’s a nice addition to this lush year of new music.
