Remember that thing called Coachella that happened last weekend? Well if you’re like me, you’ve been keeping up with other music blogs and websites on how everything went. Over at Speed of Dark you’ve got a plethora of live tracks and performance reviews from the festivities. Over at losanjealous they’ve got some pretty sweet pictures of Crystal Castles, The Cure, Okkervil River, and more. Oh and then there’s this naked batshit insane wizard hippie getting tased by some cops (NSFW).
Speaking of crazy festivities, Lollapalooza’s line-up was announced this week. Nothing new aside from Lou Reed and few others deciding they’d like to jump on the festival bandwagon. Most of these artists are already on plenty of festival line-ups so it seems everyone will be getting their fair share of TV on the Radio, Beastie Boys, and Band of Horses.

dredg put out another new song this week entitled, I Don’t Know. Apparently it’s about not knowing anything about the origins of our existence and humbly admitting so. It’s got that “ring” to it that would make it a pretty good single.
listen to it here.
Not too much going on when it comes to new releases last week. Brit-punk band Art Brut released Art Brut vs. Satan, Depeche Mode released Sounds of the Universe, Empire Of The Sun goes worldwide with the US release of Walking On A Dream, Jane’s Addiction releases their b-side collection called A Cabinet of Curiosities, and Manchester Orchestra impresses me again with Mean Everything To Nothing.

Can I afford it? Yes.
Do I have means to travel there? Yes.
Are there ample amounts of acts this year? Absolutely.
So why am I not going to Coachella? I mean, I just moved out here to California. Shouldn’t I take advantage of one of the most anticipated concert events of the year? Yeah I guess. So why have I decided not to go this year?
Because I just don’t care enough. Simple as that.
Paul McCartney, The Killers, and The Cure are all good to “say” you saw (actually, I’m confused when people say it’s cool to “say” you saw somebody. So what?). Most of the other artists I’m really into like TV on the Radio, Lykke Li, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Lupe Fiasco, and Henry Rollins, I have already seen. And artists I’m interested in seeing live like Gang Gang Dance, Girl Talk, Chemical Brothers, Fleet Foxes, Beirut, and My Bloody Valentine, are not worth the trouble and the price. And who’s to say my friends are going to want to see any of those acts? Granted you run into the same issues at any festival, but this year’s line-up just doesn’t seem to be worth the effort.
Plus with Animal Collective with Grouper in May, Mates of State with SUNBEARS! in April, a possible run to Chicago for Lollapalooza, and this year’s Outside Lands Festival here in San Francisco; what’s the point of going through all the trouble?
So to those of you that are going; more power to ya! If you’re writing about it, I’ll be on the look out and would love to hear how it went. I’ll probably be working…and I’m okay with that.

The lofty and harmonic sound coming from The Vivian Girls has gained a fair share of attention this year. Not only are they booked for this year’s SXSW, but also for the much anticipated Coachella festival. It’s no surprise though. The Vivian Girls’ latest debut record is filled with a glorious ramshackle sound and mid-80s fuzz that is both captivating and joyful. Not only that but they have released several sonically stimulating 7″s off In The Red Records. This is only the beginning for The Vivian Girls so be on the look out whether you’re at Coachella, SXSW, or at one of their upcoming overseas and US tour dates.
Ali Koehler of The Vivian Girls took the time to answer this week’s Kuestionnaire.
1. Of all the bands/artists in your CD/record collection, which one is your most cherished?
That changes constantly as my tastes change. Right now I’d say it’s my Pens/Male Bonding split seven inch because it’s awesome and I got it in London from the members of Male Bonding themselves, who quickly became good friends of ours, so it reminds me of the great time we shared with them there.
2. What have you been listening to lately?
I am obsessed with the Nodzzz full length.
3. What’s your favorite local band?
There are so many great bands in New York it’s impossible to pick one. Crystal Stilts, Blank Dogs, Woods, they’re all awesome.
4. What was the last show you attended?
Crystal Stilts played with Tyvek, Medicine and the Box Elders which was great.
5. What was the greatest show you’ve ever been to?
The Vaselines in Hoboken was mind blowing and personal, two must have qualities in a greatest show.
6. What show are you looking forward to?
Unfortunately we don’t get a whole lot of time to see shows that we aren’t playing lately, but I’m looking forward to playing with the Black Lips in London.
7. What musician would you like to hang out/work with for a day?
I think we’d all love to have been able to hang out with Nirvana in the 90s. We’re big fans of theirs and the music that was going on around them at the time, so that would be a dream come true.
8. What four albums you would bring to a deserted island?
If I have enough room to bring a stereo to play these four albums why can’t I just bring my iPod? That question is way too hard to answer.
9. Would you call yourself a music geek?
I wouldn’t but someone else probably would.
10. Any favorite music-related videos/DVDs you own?
I don’t really have very many DVDs, Cassie is a VHS purist and owns a What’s Up Matador tape from the 90s which is pretty cool though.
11. What’s the last book you read?
Dead Until Dawn. I’m a loser.
12. Do you prefer live performances or recording in the studio?
There’s so much more energy in live shows and you get to connect with other people in all different places in the world, but there is something nice about having control over the way you sound and the time to perfect it in the study.
13. Any embarrassing moments on stage you’d like to share?
Recently Katy noticed her dress was unzipped the whole time we were playing at the end of a show, I was pretty embarrassed for her.
14. Any favorite tour locations?
Our most recent favorite spot was Glasgow, Scotland, what a cool town!
15. Lastly, what have you done today?
Today was my first day off from band stuff in a while so I spent some time with my parents, made guacamole, exercised a bit, and hung out with some friends I hadn’t seen in a while and watched Pancake Mountain DVDs.

Top 10 reasons for me to be excited:
- Paul McCartney
- Leonard Cohen
- My Bloody Valentine
- Public Enemy
- Girl Talk
- Gang Gang Dance
- Mastodon (although I doubt the people I’m going with will want to see them)
- Henry Rollins?…uhh…awesome.
- Beirut
- TV on the Radio
Top 10 reasons why I’m disappointed:
- No Blur
- No Animal Collective (however I’ll be seeing them this spring…but still!)
- Possibly a Leonard vs. Paul stage timing
- Patton and Rahzel? No Faith No More? C’mon Mike!
- No She & Him
- Will Amy Winehouse live long enough to perform?
- Possible TV on the Radio vs. Fleet Foxes stage timing
- Expen$ive
- Where’s Basement Jaxx, Chemical Bros, Orbial, Underground?
- Crystal Method? srsly?
I wonder who the March surprise will be…
Anyone else got any thoughts on this?
