Water & Bodies (ex-Kaddisfly) finally released their much anticipated self-titled EP this past week. They put art, integrity and diversity into a sleek tapestry that blends progressive, aural collages into a rock based concept. Each song it’s own story, they’ve drawn comparison to everyone from Quicksand to Sparta, while remaining uniquely Water & Bodies. For them, the journey is more important than the destination.
You can purchase the album here, which will be available on vinyl in the near future. You can also catch them on tour in their home state and opening for the mighty Far…

Water & Bodies – Something I Can Grasp
Alright! I can finally go nuts about this record that I’ve been listening to the past few weeks; Jeremy Enigk’sOK Bear. It’s fantastic! I would say this is a greatest hits (although it’s not) of Jeremy Enigk’s work. The record combines the brilliant songwriting of his Sunny Day Real Estate days (April Storm) with the raw emotion of his previous solo material (Vale Oso). You can even catch a little Fire Theft in the poppier songs (Late Of Camera) on the record. I am very happy with this one and it definitely will end up on the End of Year list for me. The record came out this past Tuesday so run to your nearest record store and pick it up.
Other records to check out that came out this week are Bloc Party’s Intimacy Remixed which can be heard in full here, the beautiful Hanne Hukkelberg released Blood from a Stone, the physical release of Papercuts’ You Can Have What You Want came out, and San Francisco based experimental alt-country band Trainwreck Riders released The Perch (highly recommended).
All-around awesome band, mewithoutyou will be releasing their upcoming album it’s all crazy! it’s all false! it’s all a dream! it’s alright on May 19, 2009. From the looks of this video it seems like their taking a poppier approach while still holding that spoken word/prog-folk feel.
Track Listing:
1. every thought a Thought of You
2. the Fox, the Crow, and the Cookie
3. the Angel of Death came to David’s room
4. goodbye, I !
5. a Stick, a Carrot & String
6. bullet to Binary (pt. two)
7. Timothy hay
8. Fig with a Bellyache
9. Cattail Down
10. the King Beetle on a Coconut Estate
11. Allah, Allah, Allah
A megaload of amazing albums came out this week. First off, if you haven’t heard anything off of St. Vincent’s (Annie Clark’s) new album, Actor, yet…you’re missing out. The album is rich with cinematic pop epics and that undeniably charming nature Annie Clark is known for. Pick it up when you get the chance, it’s brilliant. Akron/Family’sSet ‘em Wild, Set ‘em Free came out this week and will get a proper review this week, so stay tuned. Cryptomnesia, the first release by El Grupo Nuevo De Omar Rodriguez Lopez, which is a new outfit differentiated from the guitarist’s other namesake projects by his selection of players, specifically Zach Hill (Hella) on drums, Jonathan Hischke (Hella) on synth bass, and Juan Alderete de la Pe¤a (The Mars Volta) on bass guitar and a guest appearance from frontman Cedric Bixler Zavala (The Mars Volta). I like this album more than some Mars Volta albums, which is a pretty good thing. Electro-freaks had a good week with Peaches releasing I Feel Cream and Fischerspooner with Entertainment. Post-metal giants Isis came out with Wavering Radiant this week. Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band released their first album credited to the group with Outer South.
St. Vincent – Laughing With A Mouth Of Blood
(the above song is a likely candidate for Song of the Year)
LA rock outfit Eulogies kicked off their 20-date US tour with The Dears last night with a show in New York at the Bell House. The band has recently released their new album, Here Anonymous and have been getting some rave reviews with their unique brand of emotional indie pop. The band will be swinging by here May 24, at the Independent in San Francisco with The Dears and Great Northern.
Eulogies – Two Can Play
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs have kicked off their US tour in case you didn’t know. However the only Bay Area swing they’ll be doing is the KITS Live 105 BFD show at the Shoreline Amphitheatre with The Offspring, 311, Taking Back Sunday…does that sound like fun to you? If it does then SHUT UP! No but seriously, the other stages have Audrye Sessions, Metric, Airborne Toxic Event, The Limousines, and Glasvegas. So I guess it’s not all bad is it?
NEW RELEASES
I felt obligated to find out who A Camp was after reading some decent reviews. So I listen to Stronger Than Jesus a few times and was kind of impressed. I’m sure I’ll end up looking into them a bit more but currently I’ve been listening the balls of the new Jeremy Enigk (woops, did it leak?) album to really care about anything else. But anyways, their new album, Colonia came out last Tuesday and so far so good in my opinion. Crocodiles’ buzzy but kind of shitty Summer of Hate came out and commercial theme indie pop band Great Northern released Remind Me Where The Light Is. Quite a ‘meh’ week for releases.
Remember that thing called Coachella that happened last weekend? Well if you’re like me, you’ve been keeping up with other music blogs and websites on how everything went. Over at Speed of Dark you’ve got a plethora of live tracks and performance reviews from the festivities. Over at losanjealous they’ve got some pretty sweet pictures of Crystal Castles, The Cure, Okkervil River, and more. Oh and then there’s this naked batshit insane wizard hippie getting tased by some cops (NSFW).
Speaking of crazy festivities, Lollapalooza’s line-up was announced this week. Nothing new aside from Lou Reed and few others deciding they’d like to jump on the festival bandwagon. Most of these artists are already on plenty of festival line-ups so it seems everyone will be getting their fair share of TV on the Radio, Beastie Boys, and Band of Horses.

dredg put out another new song this week entitled, I Don’t Know. Apparently it’s about not knowing anything about the origins of our existence and humbly admitting so. It’s got that “ring” to it that would make it a pretty good single.
Not too much going on when it comes to new releases last week. Brit-punk band Art Brut released Art Brut vs. Satan, Depeche Mode released Sounds of the Universe, Empire Of The Sun goes worldwide with the US release of Walking On A Dream, Jane’s Addiction releases their b-side collection called A Cabinet of Curiosities, and Manchester Orchestra impresses me again with Mean Everything To Nothing.
Happy Record Store Day! So what’s going on in your neighborhood? Here in the bay we’ve got Amoeba Records hosting Kylee of Loquat at 2pm, Kelley Stoltz at 3pm, John Vanderslice’s DJ Set at 4pm, and Aesop Rock’s DJ set at 5pm. Up at the Rasputin Berkley, Silversun Pickups play at 4pm and Mr. Loveless play Rasputin Concord at 5pm.
Oh and here’s my favorite quote on Record Store Day by Gavin Hayes of dredg, “Record stores are cultural gathering places where people go to share a common interest…their love for music. They are nostalgia and hot summer days. Record stores are ditching class to buy a record the day it comes out. They are Amoeba, Rasputin, and Aquarius and the distinct smell of the old records in the basement of the local mom and pop store. The record store is Run DMC on cassette tape. They are Iron Maiden posters, metal t-shirts and the magazine rack. The record store is a yellow and red Tower Records bag littered with CD labels. They are the listening stations, in store performances/signings, and staff recommendations. They are the used and local section and the free publications and zines at the front door. They are distributors of a product made up of dreams, effort, and heart that have the capability to change lives and outlooks, determine individuality, and divide or unite.”
Oh and this one by Patton Oswalt, “The idea of, ‘The journey is the destination’ is put into action by browsing in an indie record store. Besides, a human being is a much better guide than a ‘More Like This’ link on the internet.”

A handful of exciting releases this past Tuesday. We’ve got The Boy Least Likely To’sThe Law Of The Playground, Ida Maria’sFortress Round My Heart, Metric’sFantasies, Papercuts’You Can Have What You Want, Silversun Pickups’Swoon, and Medeski Martin & Wood’sRadiolarians II. I highly recommend the new Metric and Papercuts albums. In fact, I’ve really been digging Papercuts with their Dinosaur Jr meets Notwist sound. Plus they’re local, so that’s a plus.
Metric – Help I’m Alive (The Twelves Remix)
Silversun Pickups – Panic Switch (Chin and Troublemaker Remix)
Papercuts – Future Primitive
Atmospheric rock band Water & Bodies (ex-Kaddisfly) have released some new tunes and they seem to be finding their niche. I hear potential, but these tracks still need to grow on me. We’ll see…
Jeremy Enigkhas released yet another song entitled Life’s Too Short from his upcoming album, OK Bear on his myspace page. The vocals are similar to Return Of The Frog Queen but the song is way heavier than anything off Frog Queen. I am loving this direction he’s going in. May 12th Baby!
As previously posted on Stranger Dance; local venues like Bottom of the Hill, Great American Music Hall, Slim’s and Café du Nord might have to be forced to shut down unless they can meet the ABC’s requirement stating that half of their sales come from food. However, according to this recent article at SFgate, it seems as though there will be some peace and understanding among the ABC and San Francisco business owners. Including talks of a new type of license. This is very good news for the Bay Area concert goer, so we’ll see what happens over the next few weeks.
I’ll be blogging (hate that word) on the road this coming week. In fact as you read this, I’ll already be in Boston drinking heavily and celebrating my friend’s birthday. Good times. Anyway, I have quite a few reasons why I’ll be in Boston. Here are my top 5…
1. Opening Day at Fenway with the Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays! Courtesy of my good friend Katie. GO SOX!
2. Friend’s crazy Birthday pub crawl. Maybe a drunk post tonight…who knows what could happen?
3. Mates of State / Black Kids / SUNBEARS! show at the newly renovated House of Blues. Good to finally see my boys in SUNBEARS! perform.
4. Zombie parade on EASTER DAY! Will I bring a camera? Yes. Will there be a shitload of Zombie Jesus’? I’m guessing yes on that one.
5. Boston Pillow Fight Today! I don’t know where it’s going to be (yet) but I’ll definitely be there.
Mates of State – My Only Offer
Moving on…

Hey! You know that band theSTART? Probably not, but you might want to get to know the band’s side project, Normandie. A very dark 80s-ish mix of Blondie and Portishead. You like the sound of that? Well then download this low quality demo and tell me what you think.
Normandie – Little Sister (demo)
Some interesting new releases this past Tuesday. First off is the wonderful Great Lake Swimmers with Lost Channels. I seriously love this album and can already tell you that I will be listening to this album over and over on the plane. It’s very solid release, go buy it. Peter Bjorn and John return with Living Thing. Not as many catchy tunes as I would have expected, but it’s not bad. The Whitest Boy Alive’sRules is growing on me a bit. Oh and the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album, It’s Blitz, came out. I love this album so much. I’m so glad these guys went in this direction, it suits them well.
The Whitest Boy Alive – Island
No this isn’t the cover of the new My Chemical Romance album. I wouldn’t do that to you after my little April Fools gag. This is the cover of Cage’s new free E.P. I Never Knew You. He says it will be available soon, but I’m not sure when that exactly is. But here’s the dark El-P produced title track from the upcoming and much anticipated E.P.
