Thao Nguyen / Mirah
So my original plan was to see the always wonderful Mark Kozelek, but as the famous quote goes, “Life doesn’t care about your plans.” Turns out good ol’ Mark doesn’t like photographers at his concerts. So what am I supposed to do with this photo pass then? Well, I drove over to the Swedish American Music Hall to catch the other show is was interested in, Mirah with Thao Nguyen. A wise choice.
First off, I was blindsided by Carletta Sue Kay. I can’t describe them, seriously, they must be experienced. Maybe Antony and The Johnsons mixed with Loretta Lynn and …uhh….nevermind…#genrefail. They were great though, very dramatic and theatrical. They’re local too, so be on the lookout. Dave Smallen brought his basic singer-songwriter style with honesty and a bit of homegrown anger. Horse Feathers were amazing as usual. It was my second time catching them this year and they won the crowd over with ease. Afterwards, I bought a glass of red wine from guest bartender John Vanderslice and tipped him pretty well. Thao Nguyen took the stage solo, did one song, and then Mirah joined her. It was quite an experience watching the chemistry between the two. Both doing renditions of each other’s songs and providing back up for whoever was performing. Eventually they were joined by Michael Deni from Geographer and closed the night with some high energy tunes. It was a pretty special night for anyone who witnessed it.

Four Tet
After checking out The Limousines at Slim’s, I got in my car tried to hightail to The Independent to check out Four Tet. Once I found a decent parking spot, I literally just made it for his performance. The show is what you’d expect, Kieran Hebden deep in concentration mode, his music cranked, and the crowd either absorbing the sound or letting loose and dancing like an idiot. The new stuff translates well live and every click and clack was riding on a meticulously crafted and free flowing wave of digital sound. Also, if you haven’t already, pick up There Is Love In You (2010) when possible. It is quite good.

The Limousines
While I was planning on Atlas Sound (which turned into Four Tet instead) that night, I figured I’d pay a visit to Slim’s to catch our friends, The Limousines. The duo was joined by dredg drummer Dino Campanella, which added a nice touch to the already dance worthy, free spirited style of The Limos. It’s become clear the band has developed a unique identity and have matured since my first time seeing them live. The new songs sound thrillingly eclectic, endlessly colourful and never predictable. Good job boys.

Far
There was a sense of high anticipation in the air that night. Like something huge was about to collide into the Bottom of the Hill. Well it did and it’s name was Far. I’m very proud of the opening bands that brought the rain that night. Especially Picture Atlantic, who showed an extreme amount of energy and charisma during their performance. As for Far, well, they didn’t play anything new, but they did bring the house down. Plenty from Water & Solutions and Tin Cans and no silly Pony cover. That night was for the true fans who know the spirit of Far and what they’re about. A very special and fun night. And a big thanks to Noise Pop and the members of Far.
Interview coming soon….

Har Mar Superstar
It was a typical Har Mar show. Insanity, nudity, making out with random chicks, and all out super fun.
